Christmas lighting supply for outlines, wraps and ground runs

Most holiday lighting layouts are built from three elements. Outlines trace the edges of a building with C9 bulbs on socket wire. Wraps spiral LED mini strands around tree trunks, branches, columns and railings. Ground runs place C9 bulbs on stakes along walks, drives and beds. This store supplies the materials for all three, with free shipping on orders over $500, same-day shipping, no fees and 30-day returns on unused product.

Outlines

Outlines are the frame of the display: gutter lines, rakes, peaks, dormers and parapets. They're lit with C9 installation kits or cut from 1,000 ft. socket wire spools fitted with LED C9 bulbs. Mounting follows the surface: all-in-one clips and O-clips on gutters and shingles, ridge clips on peaks, tile and extended fascia clips on tile roofs and deep fascia, and magnet clips on metal.

12 in. spacing gives a tighter line for buildings seen up close. 15 in. spacing reads as a continuous line from the street and uses about 20% fewer bulbs.

Wraps

LED mini strands carry 50 lights and connect end to end. 4 in. spacing packs the lights closer for tight trunk and branch wraps; 6 in. spacing stretches each strand further for canopies, hedges and large columns. Wraps carry the display down from the roofline to eye level, which is why a layout with outlines alone often looks unfinished from the sidewalk.

Ground runs

8 in. light stakes hold C9 sockets upright along walkways, driveways and bed edges using the same socket wire as the roofline. One stake per socket. Ground runs tie the outline to the yard and lead visitors to the entry.

Balancing the three

A layout reads well when each element has a job: the outline sets the shape of the building, wraps add depth in the middle distance, and ground runs mark the path. Keeping one color temperature across all three keeps the display coherent; switching color on one element (for example, multi-color wraps under a warm white outline) is a deliberate choice that works when it's applied to the whole element, not half of it.

Measuring for a layout

Each element is measured differently. Outlines are measured in linear feet along every lit edge. Wraps are counted: each tree or column with its height and, for trunks, its circumference. Ground runs are measured in linear feet along the path or bed edge. Writing the three totals separately keeps the order straight, since outlines and ground runs both draw on socket wire and C9 bulbs but use different mounting hardware.

Power and timing

Each element usually draws from a different place: outlines from an eave or garage outlet, wraps and ground runs from a yard outlet. Plan each one back to a GFCI-protected circuit, bridge gaps with lamp cord and slide-on plugs, and put a photocell timer on each circuit so every element lights at dusk. Designing a lighting layout: outlines, wraps and ground stakes

A layout drawing turns a property into a materials list. Sketch the building from the street, the way viewers see it, and mark each lit element in one of three ways: a line along an edge for outlines, a spiral on a trunk or column for wraps, and a dotted line along the ground for staked runs. Each mark type has its own measurement and its own materials.

Outlines: the frame

Outlines follow the edges that define the building's shape: the main gutter line, the rakes up to each peak, dormers, and on commercial buildings the parapet. Measure each edge separately and note the mounting surface.

  • Which edges: light the edges seen from the main viewing point first. Rear rakes and hidden gutter lines add footage without adding to the view.
  • Spacing: 12 in. for a tight line on buildings seen up close; 15 in. for buildings seen from the street, using about 20% fewer bulbs.
  • Materials: C9 socket wire, one LED C9 bulb per socket and one clip per socket.

For sizing, a 500 ft. kit at 12 in. spacing ($935).

Wraps: depth in the middle ground

Wraps put light between the roofline and the ground, which is what gives a display depth. Measure trunks by height and estimate wrap density:

  • Trunk wraps: spiral a mini strand around the trunk with about 5 in. between turns. On a trunk 12 in. around, that uses about 2.4 ft. of strand per foot of height, so a 50-light strand at 4 in. spacing (about 16 ft. of lit length) covers roughly 6 ft. of trunk.
  • Full tree wraps: about 100 lights per foot of height for a medium density, wrapping trunk and main branches.
  • Columns and railings: one strand per 3 ft. of column height, and railings at the strand's lit length per strand, laid straight or with a loose twist.

Use 4 in. spacing strands ($295 for a 24-strand case) for tight trunk and branch work and 6 in. spacing ($260 per case) for canopies and hedges where each strand needs to reach further.

Ground stakes: the path

Staked runs mark walkways, drive edges and bed borders with C9 bulbs at ground level. They lead the eye from the street to the entry and tie the outline to the yard.

  • Measure: the length of each walk or bed edge.
  • Spacing: stakes go at every socket, so the socket wire spacing is the stake spacing. 12 in. reads as a lined path; 15 in. is more open.
  • Materials: socket wire, one bulb and one stake per socket, with stakes at $199.95 per 250-count case.

Proportion between elements

An outline with no wraps or ground runs reads as a lit box from the street. Wraps without an outline lose the shape of the building. A balanced layout lights the full front outline, wraps the trees and columns nearest the viewer, and stakes the path to the door. On larger properties, extend outward from that core rather than lighting everything at low density.

Color across the layout

Pick a color plan per element, not per run. One color temperature across all three is the simplest. A contrasting element, such as multi-color wraps under a warm white outline or red ground runs, works when the whole element changes color together.

From drawing to order

  1. Total the outline footage by spacing and choose kits or spools.
  2. Count trees and columns with heights and convert to mini strands.
  3. Total ground-run footage and convert to sockets, bulbs and stakes.
  4. Mark the outlet each element draws from and add a photocell timer per circuit ($11 each).

Keep the drawing with the order. It becomes the install map for the crew and the reorder list next season.

Questions

Should I outline, wrap or stake first?

Start with the outline, since it defines the building and carries most of the footage. Add wraps on the trees and columns closest to the viewer, then ground runs along the path to the entry.

4 in. or 6 in. mini strand spacing for tree wraps?

4 in. spacing for tight trunk and branch wraps where the lights should read as a solid line; 6 in. spacing for canopies, hedges and wide columns where each strand needs to cover more surface.

How far apart do light stakes go?

One stake per socket, so the stake spacing is the socket wire spacing: 12 in. or 15 in. along a walkway.

Can outlines and ground runs use the same socket wire?

Yes. Stakes hold the same C9 socket wire and LED C9 bulbs used on rooflines, so one spool can supply both.

What clip goes on a tile roof?

Tile and extended fascia clips reach past tile edges and deep fascia boards. They're sold in 50-packs.

What's the difference between C9 and C7 bulbs?

C9 bulbs are the larger of the two, about 1⅛ in. across on an E17 intermediate base, and are the standard for rooflines and commercial displays viewed from the street. C7 bulbs are smaller, on an E12 candelabra base, and suit close-viewed spaces like porches, railings and walkways.

Should I choose 12 in. or 15 in. spacing?

12 in. spacing gives a tighter, brighter line and is common on single-story homes and anything viewed up close. 15 in. spacing uses about 20% fewer bulbs for the same footage and is common on larger homes and commercial rooflines viewed from a distance.

Which clip do I need?

All-in-one clips fit shingles and gutters. Ridge clips mount along roof peaks. Tile and extended fascia clips are for tile roofs and deep fascia boards. Magnet clips hold to metal surfaces, and light stakes place C9 or C7 bulbs along walkways and beds.

What are sun warm, warm, pure and cool white?

They describe color temperature. Sun warm white (about 2600–2800K) is the most amber, closest to incandescent. Warm white (about 2800–3200K) is the traditional soft white. Pure white (about 4000–4200K) is neutral, and cool white (5900K and up) has a blue tint.

How much does shipping cost?

Can I return items I don't use?

Yes. Unused, uninstalled product in its original, intact packaging can be returned within 30 days of delivery. Request the return before shipping anything back.
